The student receives many levels of confidence building throughout the assignment.  He receives confidence in his work knowing that it is going to be published on the web, and he receives confidence from the feedback.  It could motivate the less motivated student if he knows others will be able to see it.

We found that the validation of Cooper's work from his teacher and his parents was very important for his self esteem. We thought that this opportunity would provide a great motivational tool for doing the assigned work. Finally, the notoriety and "celebrity" of putting their work online also is a tremendous motivational tool as well. We think having other people reading their postings from around the world would inspire the kids to do their best work possible.

Having a kid blog will help your students focus, aid in self reflections and give them a goal.  It gives the parents the ability to know what is going on in the classroom and to respond to their childs work. Positive feedback encourages and motivates students to succeed.

Sharing information/work online is valuable in that the student might take more ownership/pride in their work knowing that it will be shared with the world.  Students can also receive positive comments from anyone, not just the teacher.  Students can not say they LOST their paper!

One beneficial aspect of the activity is that by writing down the poem and comments it will have an intrinsic impact on their motivation. The second is that it provides a positive atmosphere for the student to train the themselves to think in a positive way.
